Sneak preview of version 0.5

Here are the highlights of the new version of RIOT (0.5) which is still in development:

1. Automatic Optimization Mode

RIOT revolutionizes the way images are optimized by combining the simplicity of automatic optimizations with the power of manual control.  The Automatic Mode will select the most suitable format and parameters, still allowing the freedom of manual tweaking compression parameters, for even higher compression.

You will achieve the best compression ratio easier than ever !

2. Superior PNG compression

The internal PNG compression has been substantially improved, and if often beats it’s rivals in terms of speed and filesize.

3. Enhanced transparency handling

You will be able to save palletized PNG images with a full alpha chanell. Also, support for storing variable transparency inside the palette will be added. Smart reductions apply – so, if the image has less than 256 colors and transparency levels you will save space by storing transparency in a transparency table, instead of storing the entire alpha channel.

Single color transparency in PNG24 will be also automatically used when necessary.

4.  Progress monitoring

Even if RIOT is very fast, considering the amount of operations it does at each preview update, there are situations where you’ll wait for a longer period of time, especially when dealing with large images. For a better user experience, RIOT 0.5 integrates progress monitoring for individual tasks like save, load, rotate, flip, resize.

A beta is planned for official release in a few months.  Currently 0.5 is in alpha stage.

I would dig this plugin for gimp on my Mac. Is there currently a way to add it manually instead of the exe offered?

Thank you sooo much for your work! Can’t wait for the next release.

PS. It would be really fantastic if the last used settings were restored with another image. For example I’m always exporting to PNGs with transparency and the default options is JPG; when I select PNG tab then I need to enable transparency every time, and then go back to PNG Options if I want to play with them 🙂

    @khagarot:
You are right. I haven’t had much time for working on RIOT.
Still, 0.5 is ready to be launched. Just need to add some minor features then complete a few more tests.
    0.5 will not contain
Section >3. : Enhanced transparency handling , will be postponed in a new version, because the issue is more complex.

Any news on this? It’s nice you say it’s still alive, but with 2 years of inactivity it looks more dead then alive and kicking.

I suggesting the tools looks user friendly and easy to use like step by step optimization with some tabs for manual mode. So if the automatic mode can’t give the best result or user want to reconfigure, there is manual mode. And also i suggesting it can be use with explorer so the user just right click the image(s) then optimizing.

May be you can give some open source file so other users can help you. Or use some advertising in program to keep supporting you.

    can’t wait to see it…
