Hello, you'll probably think this is a "too early" request, but very recently the WebP format has gained a lot of exposure and popularity due to the adoption/support in newer versions of Opera and Chrome (and I think is matter of time for Firefox to do the same).

WebP is a very good format already, with significantly better compression/quality ratio than JPEG, which makes it perfect for web content... And I thing it already has reached a very usable status... Is supported by a good deal of development, tools, libraries...

So I think RIOT could implement such a format without too much hassle.

What do you think?

I followed WebP format adoption since it's beginning. I think now it is too early to include it in RIOT, as there are still major browsers which does not seem to have any plans to adopt it anytime soon. And I am referring especially at Internet Explorer.
About the better compression I read some criticism from a x264 developer from which I quote:

Using a comparison of different encodings (JPEG, x264 and WebP) of a reference image, he stated that the quality of the WebP-encoded result was the worst of the three,mostly because of blurriness on the image

But most people agree that WebP provides some kind of improvement over JPEG.

I real revolutionary format will bring the best of the both worlds: PNG and JPEG.

That quote from Dark Shikari (Jason Garrett-Glaser) is from more than 6 months ago... I read his blog post and though it was very right in some points (despite some biasing IMO), things have changed a lot recently.

Improvements have been made especially in the sharpness of the image...

There's still room for improvements and still sustained work on that area (even future alpha channel support), but as you can see, there's already a great quality/size ratio compared to almost any other format out there.

Finally, is of course your decision to implement it in RIOT, but I adventure to predict that in matter of 6 months, WebP will be available in most Internet Browsers but IE... And IMHO, IE should not be a "showstopper" for this kind of decisions since historically is the most stubborn browser to implement features despite proven needs or efficiency.

Thank you for these informations. Even if we like it or not, IE does have a big influence on what formats are present on the web. Did you seen how they influenced dropping OGG/Theora from HTML5 and replacing it with H264 ? Now Google promotes WebP/WebM but they won't be widelly used on the web until IE will support them.
Nevertheless I will follow closely this new format and I may add it somewhere in the future at least for decoding.
Alpha transparency will make it very appealing.

'Glad to help :)... And that's perfect, I'm not asking for this feature to be in the next version, just knowing you are following closely the topic and taking it into consideration for the future, is enough.

P.S.: BTW, obviously I'm a huge fan and user of RIOT, I LOVE the number of options in chroma subsampling you offer in JPEG compression! It lets me squeeze a few extra KB in my images for the web!

any news on webp support recently?
It is now 8 years later, and webp support seems t obe widespread now.
Would be nice to see these option in riot now, too!

I'm also interested in WebP.
Now it is supported by Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Edge.

I wish riot to include support for WEBP format, we are going to use in our website only webp from now on!

WebP will probably come with v0.8 planned in a couple of months. 0.7 will be 64bit

Actually, +80, as in Euros.

We just sent you a 40 Euro Paypal donation and will send another once WebP support is completed!

We have enjoyed using RIOT for probably 3 years now and it is time that we gave back to the development team.

We really want to swap our websites to using pure WebP images, and your tool is what we want to use to make all our new images!

We ask that you please speed up the implementation of WebP support for RIOT!

We need it completed yesterday! :)

@prb thank you for your support.
I plan a basic WebP support in an initial release then new features will be added like using quantization and alpha transparency with palletized images. Having alpha transparency on palletized images would be a huge improvement for PNG support as well and a key missing feature.

I don't have a release date because this is a program I make in my free time, but the rough plan is to release a preliminary webp support this summer.

I can send you an early beta to test when that will be ready.

Any updates on this luciansabo?

It's been half a year since we donated and we really would be more than happy to install a beta version and provide feedback on webp use!

We love webp, but we are currently forced to use web-based tools to manipulate the images the way we need. RIOT would save us so much time if it had webp support.

I appreciate your donation. I plan to release the new version by the end of this year, but I have a lot on my plate right now because I moved house and my free time is occupied with setting things up in my new house. I expect to have more free time in the next months.

If the WebP image is animated, this operation should also aware of additional information for the animation, and keep image animatable.

It has been a year since my donation and request for WebP integration and 45 days into the new year.

Disappointing for sure.

We hope you are doing well and that this update, or at least Beta Testing of a WebP enabled version of the software, is very near to being ready.

Thank you for your product's previous updates and excellentness in years past.

Really...?

RIOT is no "product". If your need is that urgent, I'd recommend buying some commercial software.

Releases have been slow most of the time as you could see while reading the forum. And for me a donation is not a buy but an appreciation of someones work and effort so far.

Just my 2ct though...

I have a preliminary version with WebP support. This includes:
- lossy compression
- near lossless compression
- lossless compression (quality slider controls compression speed/efficiency)
- best compression checkbox providing superior compression by sacrificing speed

If you want to test this preliminary version, please send me an email at [email protected] and I will send you a download link.
All I am asking in return is to provide some feedback.

This is an early access version, and more features/fixes will be added for the new RIOT version which is called 2022.3.

The current build also contains some improvements for HiDPI and a few updated higher quality icons.

There are high chances that the new RIOT version will offer WebP as a pro/paid feature and more paid features will come.

This change is mostly because a lot of users have high expectations of release schedule and maintenance from this old free program, but they didn't donate a cent. Now is their chance to finally pay for these features.
