Can RIOT auto-detect the number of colours in an image?
This is important because if I import an image which has only 5 colours, then I should not go and save it as an image which has more than 5 colours, thus making the file size larger than necessary.
So can RIOT count the colours and automatically adjust the colour reduction metre for us ? Example: if I open a 5-colour image, let the colour reduction be set to 5. We can then increase it to 256 or true colours if we want.

How to have a png with greyscale 128 colours?
RIOT allows only greyscale 256 colours.
I guess it would help reduce image file size if we could reduce greyscale images to less than 256 colours. Would it?

In RIOT is there no way to directly convert PNG or GIF images to greyscale?
Only JPEG has the greyscale option. That means to convert my Png to greyscale I must first convert it to JPEG, thus losing quality.
Does RIOT have another way ? Or are there other software that can let me convert multiple Png or Gif images to greyscale?

Color quantization is not meant to produce posterized results. In fact, if your images get posterized, this means you are doing something wrong, apart from the situation when you want this to happen.
Don't try to reduce photos to 128 colors. Instead, reduce images which seem to have few colors as visual perception, but in reality are stored with a higher color depth. Color quantization is smart enough to keep only the most important colors - the most frequent ones.
So the thumb rules are:
1. use as many colors as you need, but choose a format like PNG or GIF for images with few perceptible colors
2. use JPEG for photos
3. use true color PNG if you want to keep the maximum quality of photos

(There is also one problem: there are some software, like Game Maker 5, that seem to take a compressed image and decompress it again, increasing the file size. How can we avoid that? )

You can't avoid this but if you work with a lossless format like PNG you won't lose quality along the way also. JPEG looses quality at each re-compression.

Thank you for replying.
When I reduce the number of image colours(e.g. from 256 to 128 colours), the image can get ugly due to "posterization"(the gaps left by the removed colours,I think).
So I wanted to rather desaturate, because in desaturation there is no posterization. But I was disappointed to see that desaturation increased file size ( and sometimes an over-saturated image is smaller than a desaturated one).
What do you mean by reducing "unique" colours? RIOT does not let me choose which colour to remove.
(There is also one problem: there are some software, like Game Maker 5, that seem to take a compressed image and decompress it again, increasing the file size. How can we avoid that? )

RIOT does not provide yet Saturation adjustment.
Saturation refers to color intensity. The colors are not removed, but their intensity is simply reduced. If the saturation is drastically reduced the image may compress better.
But you should ask yourself: why alter the colors of an image, especially if they look good that way ?
I tkink optimization should be lossless or close to lossless.
If you have an image with few colors try reducing the number of unique colors instead and choose a proper format. But don't exagerate because the image must be optimized not simplified.

I don't think Riot has image desaturation ability. But... Does desaturating images reduce file size ?
In my experience, image file sizes have increased after I used an image editor to desaturate them. Why?
I thought desaturation means removing colour data from an image, so logically file size should reduce.

With 0.4.0 in beta for more than a month, it is the time now to release the first stable version of this branch – 0.4.1

As you would guess this version fixes some issues of the beta version. Now 0.4.1 is considered a production release.
The most important fixes are made for the external PNG optimizer implementation, but there are some usability changes, also.

v.0.4.1
- fixed some issues with the external PNG optimizer implementation

	(replace {IMAGE_FILE} parameter is done only once. fixed;
a custom PNG is not remembered at program restart. fixed;
delete/configure buttons should not be disabled after adding an external optimizer. fixed;
modifying an external optimizer name creates orphan records. fixed. added checks for duplicate tool names;
scripts as external optimizersnot working out-of-the-box. fixed)

- bugfix: "Remove selected" button from batch mode disables when a multiple selection is made with the mouse. The keyboard selection worked. Fixed !
- fixed some issue related to automatic preview mode disabled.
- Preview button now disabled when "AUtomatic preview" is on
- improved performance of conversion functions from transparent indexed images
- changed shortcuts for "Fit in window" ( now / ) and "Actual size" (now * ). These simpler ones should increase productivity
- changed batch settings by adding an "Apply" button. to be more intuitive
- fixed an unwanted behavior with selecting and option without actualy putting a check next to it, which causes that option to apply.
- modified an error message to specify that both dimensions are required for batch resize

A dpi setting (in conjunction with cm/inch) is useful to see how much smaller the dimensions can be. If one wants the picture to be 14cm wide, to fit on an A4 in a document, one could get a much smaller filesize, and also exactly what this person would need. A dpi of 300 at most would be nice (96~120 for screen), I think it would be useful for the screen as well. Well, indeed, in case of using cm/inch values, dpi's required.

If I have not convinced you, please stay with your decision!)

(2nd)
Cool!

(4th point)
Hmm, I really thought this would be (very) useful. What if the user sees the image in the right pane, zoomed to, say, 46%, thinking "that's exactly the dimensions I want"? Maybe if you just provide the dimensions? The user can then enter them manually in the Resample dialog.

Alright, that's it. Thanks again for this opportunity to respond, and for a wonderful programme.

First, thank you for your support !
About your suggestions:

a dpi with cm/inch calculator (calculating pixel sizes)

This program is designed to optimize images in order to minimize filesize. The DPI values has no impact on filesize. RIOT only keeps the original resolution and it is not necessary to calculate or reduce it for the purpose of this program.
The DPI values are usually used for printing.

a (relative) simple masking/feather feature, that hides the one colour(s) surrounding the image.

Choosing the transparent color/area is planned, but I can't give an ETA.

indeed open translation, or something that inserts translation (localization) into the code.

There is already a feature request on this. If enough people want it, I will implement it.

adopt zoom value, actually adopt display dimensions (ie. adopt screen display image size to the Resample dialog)

I really haven't heard of such feature until now, and I can't say I find it useful. I think it will confuse the users, and I don't see any usability enhancement by adding this. Sorry :)

Dear Lucian Sabo,

some feature suggestions:
- adopt zoom value, actually adopt display dimensions (ie. adopt screen display image size to the Resample dialog)
There should probably a zoom slider next to the quality slider for fine tuning. I agree on the quality of IrfanView; when you zoom there it displays the zoom size, and that's what I mean by adopting those values to the Resample dialog.

- a dpi with cm/inch calculator (calculating pixel sizes)

- a (relative) simple masking/feather feature, that hides the one colour(s) surrounding the image.

- indeed open translation, or something that inserts translation (localization) into the code. You could substitute the main localization that's already there with prefixes I propose? Some more experienced programmers may have comments on this.

Great tool! Well done.

This would be the case if you had one of the default PNG optimizers selected (OptiPNG or PNGout) and decided to add a tool. It also could occur if you subsequently added tools one after another, each of which would inherit the condition.

>To work with pngrewrite the workaround is to put in parameters:
>{IMAGE_FILE} %TEMP%\riot-temp.png

Actually, that won't work because RIOT does not accept environmental variables such as %TEMP% in the tool path or parameters. You must use the full path to the tool, file or image. So, for the workaround you should use:

{IMAGE_FILE} D:\DOCUME~1\USER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\riot-temp.png

or whatever the path is to your profile's %TEMP% folder on your system.

Maybe RIOT will include environmental variable expansion in the next version?

- RIOT seems to replace {IMAGE_FILE} only once, that causes unexpected behavior when two or more {IMAGE_FILE} are put in the parameter property.
Some command line programs require to specify both the source and the destination.
In general, if the destination (output file) is omitted, the source file is used as destination.
For example pngrewrite requires both in its syntax.
To work with pngrewrite the workaround is to put in parameters:
{IMAGE_FILE} %TEMP%\riot-temp.png

- there are some issues with the batch files or programs that return a non-zero value as error level due to a design error. In these cases the optimized files (if saved) are not used, because a non-zero return code means return with error. This is not a RIOT bug and can be fixed for batch if you put

rem

at the end of the script

- RIOT does not handle the tool names well. If you edit an established tool's
name using the configuration dialog, then a new section is placed in the INI, yet the old section strangely remains. So, the INI gets filled with several unnecessary entries of the same tools just with different names. Thus, when you restart RIOT all the old names appear in the drop-down list, making it cluttered and confusing.

Sometimes, you can end up with two tools with the same name in the drop-down if you switch back to the old name in the same session. In other cases, a pre-existing tool's section in the INI will actually get overwritten, causing a loss of a tool.

- When leaving Automatic Preview disabled, if one uses PNGout
subsequently after optiPNG, and PNGout produces a larger filesize, the
warning message is not displayed. Thus, the larger image gets shown
in the window as well.

There is a bug in 0.4.0 that does not allow to successfully use bat, vbs, js or wsf files as external optimizers.

For these kind of files the program needs to call the
interpreter to execute the script.
So here is a workaround to use batch files:

1. create a batch that uses parameters
here is an example:

"d:\Luci\Desktop\RIOT_Optimizer_beta\Riot\plugins\optipng.exe" -o2 %1
"d:\Luci\Desktop\RIOT_Optimizer_beta\Riot\plugins\pngout.exe" /force %1

2. Add/modify external optimizer
- give a tool name
- tool path should be
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
or whatever is your path to cmd.exe
- parameters should be

/C <path_to_bat>\filename.bat {IMAGE_FILE}

pay attention to that /C argument that basically means "execute it"

Same thng for vbscipt, jscript, wsf - you need to specify the
interpreter as program.

In the next version I will fix this to work as expected.

The Resize function in px mode, if you entered only W:
This error message appears : The resized image width or height is invalid!

He would then change the error message indicating that the values W and H are both mandatory.
For coming version without Batch Optimizer it was unnecessary and confusing now.

when Riot is used for keep original file. When we save optimized file
in the same folder as the original.

- new: ability to easily use well known external PNG optimizers like optiPNG, PNGOut.
Also, any other tools can be added for use (for example AdvanceCOMP, pngCrush, etc).
- option to apply by default the fastest PNG (ZLIB) compression when "Best compression" is unchecked (speeds some things up, like performing quantization, removing metadata, etc)
- updated libraries to LibTIFF 3.9.2, zlib 1.2.4, libpng 1.4.1 and OpenJPEG 1.3.0
- main form position is now remembered when "Save settings on exit" is enabled
- fixed loading of TGA with a corrupted RLE count
- drag & drop multiple files support (opens the batch optimizer)
- command line option: when multiple files are specified, the batch dialog is showed with the supported files added to the list
- comments/textual data from other formats are now successfully transferred to JPEG comment
- optimized math functions (faster zooming)
- replaced some code snippets with faster and smaller equivalents
- the file filter for the open dialog is now built dynamically based on available internal and external plugins with read support

RIOT is not an image converter. It saves only the formats available for the web (JPEG, GIF and PNG).
This is a rare and proprietary format. I don't know an application even to read it.

When trying to save a file under a name that already exists, the "save as" dialog box appears. Normally, the (already existing) file name is filled in as a default. This is very handy if you just want to save the file to a different folder or to add somme discerning letter without altering the original name too much.

Unfortunately, this does not work after using the resize function of RIOT. Then, the file name is set to "untitled.jpg", which means that I have to type in the original file name again if I want to keep this info (with the stand alone prog as well as with the IrfanView plug-in).

Wouldn't it be nice to have the same behaviour in both cases?

Kind regards and many thanks for your very much appreciated software,

APNG and GIF (animated) support

There is partial support for APNG and GIF - that is only for loading the first frame. Currently the program is not designed to handle multipage/multiframe images. But it would be a nice idea, when other browsers along with Firefox and Opera will support APNGs. Animated GIFs are deprecated and not used anymore by professionals.

save settings in a ini file

The settings are already saved in a ini file if you enable "Save settings on exit" from Tools->Options.

external optimizer support for JPG, GIF

This is planned, but do you know such tools with command line support worth including ?
