Even if I use gettext for my web projects, the po format is a little bit more complicated than ini

A quick sample:

#: \controllers\contacts_controller.php:42
#: \views\elements\admin\navigation.ctp:82;84
msgid "Contacts"
msgstr "Contacte"

The translator will break things if they delete or translate anything except the string in msgstr.
Using specialized programs is a safer approach.
XML files suffer from the same syntax issues. I don't see any reason to use XHL instead of ini or gettext. With XML the files will only get bigger unnecessarily due to the XML syntax.

So, I would prefer gettext, but not all translators will know how to create them because not all of them do this on a regular basis.

Hello Lucian,
A suggestion for having a handy tool to manage translations...
As the official translator of SBSH Pocket Weather, i (we, translators !) use a free program called translator.exe, wich can handdle XML files.
You've got the original sentence, and a box to perform translation... It's so simple !
I think this program is not related to SBSH company (a GNU license, maybe ?) and can be used to perform RIOT translation...

To read a little more about translator tool...
http://wiki.sbsh.net/index.php/PocketWeather_Translation

A sample file (in fact, PocketWeather translation) is provided, so you can see if it fits your needs.

The great advantage is that you can modify the XML file, even without translator.exe !

even if RIOT is simple software, localization for sure will help to increase it user base. especially in Poland where English is still not popular as it should be and there is large base of old computer users, who won't learn English.

as translator i can only suggest one thing: please chose such way where is possibility to have plain text for translators. doesn't matter if after translation you will have to compile it or transform to anything you like, but please allow translating in plain text form. this will help a lot to speed up translation using CAT software and handling updates in future. i really don't like to work with closed formats where you have to use specialized tool for translation or resource hacker to edit dll or exe files, which are obsolete after next update and you have to do your job from scratch again.

to avoid problems with encoding IMO UTF-8 should be considered as minimum.

What this should do is load multiple image files at once, find one common optimal palette for all of them and then save them using this palette.

The next version of RIOT will support indexed images with alpha transparency. This means you can have an image with 256 colors AND with alpha.
Posterization is similar to quantization but not the same. By using color quantization you can end up with a posterized image when using few colors. For the optimization purpose, quantization can be more useful, I think. There are situations where posterization can help also. Also for your image I think quantization to 256 colors is better than posterization. Posterization has limited usage cases in my opinion and among them I can thing of recovering line art damaged by JPEG compression.

Hi
First of all: Your script is really great. Thanks a lot for that!

Anyway I'm missing a function yet:
Like explained in http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/07/15/clever-png-optimization-techniques/ the posterize option in photoshop is very useful to decrease filesizes of images - specially png.

Now my first question: Does it work the same like color quantization? Because as far as I understand it posterize looks for regions in the image with almost the same color. Does the already implemented color quantization the same? Or does it only tries to find the best 256 colors (for example) for the whole image?

If it doesn't do the same thing it would be great if such an option could be implemented.
If it already does the same thing I'd really like an option to be reduce colors of an image and keeping alpha transpaprency. So I'd like to be able to reduce the colors but to save the image as "True Image" png. That would be great for us webdesigners which sometimes need alpha transparency on photos.

Example: http://www.edleschnittchen.ch/images/home_right.png
With RIOT I couldn't optimize the raw image a lot without losing the alpha transparency. Naturally "Optimal 256 Color Palette" was better but the border didn't look good.
The only way to really improve filesize was to use posterize from photoshop, save it and optimize it with RIOT afterwards by using PNGout and save it as "True Image". This kept the image quality and improved file size a lot.

So for photos with transparency I always have to make these two steps. If this could be implement it directly in RIOT this would be perfect! :)

Thanks and sorry for the long message! :)
Janis

Hello to all,
Using for a few months TheGimp, one of the tools i've been missing from an old PaintShopPro version (V 6.0, an oldie collector !) was the 'Batch conversion'

Nice ! With a plug-in i can have this tool ! I would like to thank you for that handy plug, witch makes my life easier !
Typical use of it :
Reduce 10Mpx pics onto 1024*768 to publish them onto my Facebook album
Reduce compression size of JPEG between 100% (my camera) and 90% (or 80%) for my disk space...

Two suggestions for improving this tool :

- Foreign languages : I've seen onto this board that you may make this for further version : I'm willing to help for the French version, that would be my 'donation' for using a such handy tool... Let me know if i can help... As i see you're from Romania, you should understand that foreign people will love a tool in their native language ! ;)

- JPEG % of compression instead of size : I would like, in batch conversions, use another parameter to batch-treat my files : Instead (or maybe added !) of "Filesize threshold in KB", i would like to have "compression in %" (ex : JPEG with 10% of compression, or 90% as indicated by TheGimp).
If i use the "filesize" filter, set (of eg) to 1.5Mb : Images with 4Mb will be shinked (nice !) but images in the same folder with 1.2Mb will be raised up to 1.5Mb (and this is not good for my valuable space onto my disk ! :) )

Hi all,

I just found this website and had a try with version 0.4.6 . RIOT looks very capable, except for one missing parameter when resampling is done, namely Gamma. When the resampling is not executed at gamma 1.0 then there may be issues such as described at:
http://www.4p8.com/eric.brasseur/gamma.html

It would be great if that could be added to an otherwise already very capable image converter.

Cheers,
Bart

I plan to add a feature to output original image when the optimized is bigger (in Batch).
The next version (0.5) will have the automatic mode, but what you are trying to accomplish is reduce the size by a certain ammount, which can be added to Compress to size as Compress to percent. just an idea. It is harder to get the used compression level for images with non-standard quantization tables (usually optimized ones).

Hi Lucian!

Thanks for such a neat piece of software.
I really like RIOT!

I have been looking for a way to batch resample/optimize JPG images based on the quality/compression level of the images.

I want to do this so that I could select only those images which has less compression (let’s say 80-100%) and batch process them to lower compression level (say 75%) to save hard disk space.

I have loads of reference images with various compression level. If I apply compression to all the images then the ones with already low compression get reprocessed resulting really lower quality images and sometime the image size increases also!

Is it possible to add this kind of feature in RIOT?
This kind of option would be truly great and helpful to many users.

Hi there, as I've posted already at "Batch optimizing" topic 2 months ago, a mask for the destination file name might be a good solution (as used e.g. by Nero for naming the particular MP3 files when grabbing an audio CD). For example, "%n%" for previous filename, "%e%" for previous file extension etc., so that having set "%n%_riot.%e%" or "%n%_small.%e%" as the default destination and processing e.g. "IMG23421.jpg", RIOT would propose "IMG23421_riot.jpg" as the default output name. Would be nice and helpful.
With regards,
Piotr
